handshakeThe money is in the list?  Quite true … here’s the whole truth (one more time!)  The money is in your relationship with the list.

In other words, if you want to succeed in marketing it’s not enough to have a pile of leads. You need to build a relationship with them in which they know, like and trust you.  And in turn you need to know, appreciate, and provide value for them.

Your email subscriber list is absolutely your greatest asset in online business, but how do you REALLY get to know your subscribers?  Those faceless names in your autoresponder program.

Here are 5 suggestions to start with (and 3 of them are often overlooked!)

1. Pay attention to which links they click on in your emails (and that means you need to track your links!).

Whether they are clicking to read content you provide, take a product recommendation you offer, or sign up for more information, pay close attention. What gets their attention?

2. Take note of which types of products they are actually buying through your links.

It seems like a no-brainer, but it’s amazing how many internet marketers fail to do honest evaluation here. Note which products flop and which seem to get a lot of response.  Even if you poured hours into creating a product, if no-one’s interested in it, sooner or later you’re going to have to cut the dog loose!  (Writers call it “killing your darlings”.)

3. Invite subscribers to submit feedback on your blog on a certain topic.

Blogs are a great way to fish for winning niches and topics. The response you get to a post on any particular subject can be incredibly valuable and give you insight into your readers.  So write great, provocative posts, mail all your subscribers with the first couple of paragraphs and the URL to read it all on your blog.  Note how many click to read the whole post.  How many respond with a comment?  What did they have to say?

4. When your readers do comment on your blog, take the time to click through to their websites.

See what they are talking about, what their problems are, what products they are buying. Do this on a regular basis and you’ll come to understand your typical audience even further.

5. Survey your subscribers.

Now, I think surveys do have their place, but never rely on this alone. I think taking note of BEHAVIOR is far more powerful. When you create a survey, people get to answer how they THINK they will behave. Thing is, people often behave in ways that are very different from how they ACTUALLY behave.
